The Idea to Keep Bees

Journal bees

Somebody mentioned keeping bees and now I cannot stop thinking about it. The pitch is easy to sell on: a hive in the back garden, honey once a year, no neighbours bothered because the bees are miles away most of the time.

The reality has more moving parts than that. The first thing I have to check is whether I am even allowed to keep bees where I live, because some local rules cap the number of hives per property and it is not worth finding out afterwards. After that it is siting. South facing, sheltered from the prevailing wind, near enough to the house to inspect but not right against it.

The actual gear is the part I keep going back and forth on. A brand new national hive with frames, veil, smoker, extractor and a decent honey bucket is not a small amount of money, and it is a lot of plastic and wood to sit in a shed for someone who might give up in a year. A second hand setup would be cheaper but I would need to know what condition the boxes are in, because old brood frames harbour disease.

Then there is the time question, which I think is the real one. Inspection every week or so through summer, in whatever the weather is doing, plus the neighbours and the fence line and the fact that I already have a bad habit of taking on projects and dropping them.

This is a planning post rather than a report. Nothing is ordered and no bees have been harmed. The next step is the local beekeeping association, which every beginner guide insists is the correct first step, and I am finally going to listen to that.
